Beachwood Medical Center: Focused on the Patient Experience

Patient- and family-centered care delivered in a fundamentally better healing environment.

Using evidenced-based design principles and input on what matters to patients, Beachwood Medical Center is the result of a partnership among more than 20 independent physicians and Lake Health.

The hospital, which specializes in orthopedic surgery, urology and pain management care, is focused on comfort, safety, efficiency and patient- and family-centered care.

Designed for healing

“From the beginning, our vision was to open a facility where we could provide the best care for our patients in an intimate and efficient, yet patient-friendly setting,” says orthopedic surgeon and physician partner Reuben Gobezie, MD. “The entire facility, from patient suites to surgical suites, was designed for the ideal healing environment and patient experience. We looked at everything: comfort, safety, beauty, flexibility, efficiency, air quality, communications, furnishings, technologies…even the food.”

All patient rooms are private suites, promoting rest, while minimizing infection. Patients can control their room temperature, lighting and timing of meals, and a family zone offers the flexibility for staying overnight. Natural light, artwork, wireless communication and other features reduce stress and support healing.

Beyond beauty, the design maximizes patient privacy, yet allows safe observation by nursing staff.

High-touch meets high-tech

Diagnostic lab and imaging services, physical therapy and physician office space support the medical and surgical care, and innovations that strengthen patient outcomes and customer service are a high priority. Throughout the facility, the electronic medical record offers immediate access to every aspect of the patient’s care: results of diagnostic imaging and lab tests, medications, treatments, and physician and nursing notes.

“The hospital’s emergency room and surgery areas are specifically designed to accommodate the surgical expertise of many of the physician partners,” explains Leslie Manzo, RN, BSN, MBA, chief administrative officer of Beachwood Medical Center.

The operating rooms (ORs) surround a central core which holds all supplies, allowing easy and efficient access to everything needed. Strict OR access and instrument sterilization practices minimize contamination and infections.

Lake Health Beachwood Medical Center Leadership Team Image-2Large, state-of-the-art surgical theaters easily accommodate the equipment and surgical team. ORs are equipped with the latest in LED surgical lighting and the most up-to-date video system. Booms from the ceiling hold the camera and video equipment that project the image from the surgical field to two large high-definition monitors on either side of the operating table. A third monitor is located on the wall above the patient’s head where all surgical staff can view it. OR staff can control and change the information displayed on the screens, including any radiology images required for reference.

This hospital is distinct. Its design is warm and intimate to improve the patient experience. Its efficiencies were designed to offer lower complication rates, superior outcomes, higher patient satisfaction and lower costs.

“A tremendous amount of thought and planning went into creating Beachwood Medical Center,” says Cynthia Moore-Hardy, FACHE, president and CEO of Lake Health. “The result is a unique hospital that puts the patient-doctor relationship front and center and focuses on improving the patient experience and outcome.”
