When adopting a new, healthier diet after weight loss surgery, many people question if artificial sweeteners are a good alternative to sugar. Dr. Aviv Ben-Meir explains which option is healthier and most helpful in sticking to a diet that meets your weight loss goals:

One of Dr. Aviv Ben-Meir's tips for weight loss surgery success is to avoid liquid calories. Many popular beverages such as soda, sports drinks or even sweetened coffee drinks are high in sugar and add calories to your diet without much extra nutrition.

Are artificial sweeteners safe?

Myth: Artificial sweeteners are worse for you than sugar for your diet after bariatric surgery.

Fact: Sugar is the worst! There's a long standing myth that artificial sweeteners, such as Splenda, Sweet N Low and Equal, are dangerous and unsafe. This is not true. These sweeteners are safe and are a healthier alternative to table sugar and honey.

How can sugar derail my diet?

Sugar causes your blood sugar to spike very high and then drop down quickly, which often leads to you feeling hungry and craving more sugar. Foods and drinks high in sugar also have excess calories, which can easily lead to weight gain.

What are some sugar-free options if I get bored with water?

Overall, it is best to drink primarily unsweetened beverages throughout the day. If you get bored with plain water, try black coffee and unsweetened teas for another great option. When you need a change and are craving a sweet drink, be sure that it is sugar-free, such as diet tea, Crystal Light or water flavor drops.
